121070 | William Stafford was born in Warwickshire, England about the same time that the English arrived at Jamestown, Virginia. He came to Jamestown, Virginia at 16 years of age as a ward or servant of Francis Mason on the ship "Furtherance". (Hotten: Arrivals in Virginia of persons of Quality). He made his home at Elizabeth City, Virginia. There is a possibility that he could have been the son or grandson of Sir William Stafford of Grafton, England, being 5 or 6 when his father died in 1612, making his date of birth about 1606. Christenings.September.County: Warwick,Country: England 09 Sep 1604 , Mr William Stafforde, sonne of Mr William Stafford, Knighte. William Wells was granted 50 acres in the county of Elizabeth City at the head of Hampton River, adjoining the lands of William Stafford and John Place. Due for his own personal adventure. By West, last day of March, 1636. He apparently died suddenly in 1644. There is a will and inventory of his estate dated March 3, 1644. Title: History of Ross & Highland Counties, Ohio Publication: Williams Bros, Pub. 1880 Cleveland, Ohio Page: Pages 494 & 398 Text: Page 494: "In 1804, William Stafford and his four sons, Jonas, James, Robert and John made settlement between Fall and Hardin's creek, and in the immediate neighborhood of Abner Robinson. Two of the sons bought farms and at once built houses for themselves. Their farms embraced much of the land now owned by the members of the Leverton, Tompkins, Ladd and McNeil families." Page 398: "In the spring of 1813, James, Robert and Jonah Stafford, emigrants from North Carolina, who had located a short time before on Buckskin Creek, within the present limits of Ross county, cut their way through the heavy timber, making a road as they went, to Hardin's creek. They settled on land afterwards owned by Benjamin F. Barrett, John Morrow, and Jacob Tompkins." Compiler's note: This history was published in 1880.
