John Calhoun Stafford was a Cadet at the Hillsboro Military Academy at the outbreak of the Civil War. He enlisted at the age of 20 in Company K, 48th Regiment, NC Troops, CSA (known as the "Confederate Guards") when the unit was raised in Forsyth County, NC in early March, 1862. Shortly afterwards, he was elected 2nd Lieutenant (as was then the custom in CSA units) on March 12, 1862. He was soon promoted to 1st Lieutenant on July 3, 1862. He was promoted to Captain on September 27, 1862 and given command of Company K before his 21st birthday.

He was the sole surviving officer in Company K when he was gravely wounded on December 13, 1862 during the bloody "Battle of Fredericksburg, VA." He was hospitalized at Lynchburg, Va before being returned home to Winston, NC where he died of his wounds shortly thereafter on January 24, 1863. Prior to that battle he also fought with the 48th at Petersburg, VA; City Point (near Hopewell, VA); French's Farm ( near Richmond, VA); Gaines' Mill ( during the "Seven Day's Battle near Richmond); the capture of Harper's Ferry. MD on 15 September, 1862); and at Antietam, near Sharpsburg, MD.

He was recognized as "A good and brave soldier". An elegiac poem, composed in his memory by two lady admirers, was published in the "Greensboro Patriot" on Feb. 12, 1863.

JOHN STAFFORD IV is believed to have been born in that part of Dorchester County, MD which later became part of Caroline County when it was formed in 1774.

A "Balam, John and two James Stafford" are listed in the 1790 census for Caroline County, MD. A "Balaane Stafford" and "Nathaniel Stafford" are listed in the 1800 census for Caroline County, MD. It is noted that John Stafford, son of John Stafford III, had brothers named Balaam, James and Nathaniel.

The following info does not apply to John IV. It concerns his father and other ancestors. It is included for reference only!

Was he the Capttain John Stafford who was a member of the East Battalion, 6th Company, Burrsville section, Caroline County, MD that served during the Revolutionary War?

"John STAFFORD [Safford] III, m. Sarah Hubbard (or Hubert), dau. of John Hubbert (or Hubbard).
Note: John Hubbert/Hubbard died leaving a will dated 29 May 1773, proved 25 Oct 1773. Mentioned were eldest dau. Roseanah Causey, wife of Thomas Causey; youngest dau. Sarah Safford, wife of John Safford; son Solomon Hubert; and granddau. Mary Hickman, wife of William Hickman.
SARAH's father, John Hubert died leaving a will dated 29 May, 1773, proved 25 Oct., 1773. Mentioned were eldest daughter, Roseanah Causey, wife of Thomas Causey; youngest daughter, Sarah Stafford, wife of John Stafford; son, Solomon Herbert; and granddaughter, Mary Hickman, wife of William Hickman.

On 11 Aug 1766 John Stafford (Safford) and his wife Sarah of DO Co. conveyed to Anthony Ross, cooper, land between the Northwest and Northeast Forks in Nanticoke called "Safford's Fortune, 68 a."
Note: It is believed that "Saffords Fortune" later became part of the land called "Staffords Fortune" which was listed in 1783 as belonging to Anthony Ross. i.e., "Anthony Ross. Staffords Fortune, 184 acres. CA Lower Choptank District Hundred, p. 54." -- Maryland State Archives - Maryland Indexes- Assessment of 1783, Caroline County ( Caroline County was formed in 1774 from Dorchester County, MD). It is also believed that Anthony Ross probably was related to the William Ross mentioned in the will of JOHN IV who, according to JOHN IV's will, may have the owned land adjoining that owned by JOHN IV. It is also noted that the will of JOHN STAFFORD II left to his "son Elijah Stafford, 63 a. called "Stafford Fortune" and 30 a. at the beginning bounded tree of a tract called "Stafford Outlet".

On 12 Nov 1767, John Safford and his wife Sarah conveyed to Abraham Foxwell, cooper, "Hog Quarter", 82 acres.

JOHN and his brother, TRICE (sons of James, b. 1702+, and Mary Stafford) were said (but not proven) to be living in Guilford Co., NC when they sold, on 19 November 1784, for £50 inherited land to Michael Todd, III, (b. ca 1733-1802), farmer, of Caroline Co., MD who was a son of Michael, Jr. & Mary TODD. The land, containing 46 ½ acres, was part of a tract called "Robin Hood or Robinhood"; it adjoined "Todd's Venture." (RBL, Lib. GF#A fol. 797) and was located close to the MD/DE line in Caroline Co., MD (this area was Dorchester County before Caroline County was formed in 1774). The land record also was signed (or permission was granted) by JOHN and TRICE's mother, Mary Stafford, of Sussex Co., DE. ( Source of this land transaction was Parker Todd < [email protected]>, a descendant of Michael Todd, III)
There seems to have been some problem with this transaction since Michael sold back this land to John Stafford (Safford) of Guilford County, North Carolina on 16 September 1785 and on the same day Trice Stafford of Guilford County, North Carolina, attorney for his brother John Stafford, sold it back to Michael Todd. (RBL, GF#A fol. 866 & 869)

Sarah Stafford d. leaving a will dated 25 Dec 1795, proved 26 Jan 1796.
Mentioned were Abraham Stafford, Elizabeth Hackett, son Nathaniel Stafford, Margaret Hackett, Elizabeth Ross, and son Balsam (Balam/Balaam) Stafford, exec.

JOHN III d. leaving a will (see below) dated 18th day 10th month 1792 [Quaker style]. He left to his wife, Sarah, the dwelling house and lands adj. Mentioned were sons Balaam (Balsam/Balam?) Stafford, Nathaniel Stafford, John Stafford V and James Stafford, and dau. Mary, wife of Elijah Wootters (Wooters). To William Ross called Long William, the tract Vinsons Lott.

Sarah Stafford d. leaving a will dated 25 Dec 1795, proved 26 Jan 1796.

In researching the family of the above JOHN STAFFORD III to determine if he might be the father of the JOHN STAFFORD (b. 1756) believed to be the patriarch of the South Forks-Kernersville Stafford lines, I have found the following which rules him and his son, JOHN STAFFORD V out as possible candidates:

JOHN STAFFORD III (maker of the above will) was b. abt.1733, d. between Oct. 18, 1792 & Nov. 20, 1792 in Caroline Co. MD. He married SARAH HUBBARD/HUBERT, b. date and place unknown. She died 1795/1796 in Caroline Co. MD. Sarah's first husband was Thomas Hackett.

NC, had the following known children: a son, Emanuel b. 1821-1823 in Guilford Co. NC; a daughter, Sarah b. 1815-1820, place unknown.
