2658 | VALENTINE PEGG, born April 10, 1744, Maryland; died Nov. 24, 1828 in Whitewater, Wayne Co., IN. VALENTINE, during 1770, was living in Mispillion Hundred, Kent County, Delaware. He migrated to Guilford County, NC as part of the Nicholite sect from the Maryland/Delaware border area and was one of the original Nicolite settlers in the Guilford County area. -- VALENTINE married his first wife, MARY STAFFORD, b: ca. 1748, Sussex Co., DE. She was the daughter of Henry & Elizabeth Stafford. MARY and VALENTINE were married prior to May, 1776. Source of marriage date: MARY's father, Henry Stafford II, stated in his will, dated May 21, 1776, that "I also give to my daughter Mary Pegg: the sum of one shilling - Sterling" which indicates that Mary had married Valentine Pegg prior to 1776, --VALENTINE & MARY (Stafford) are believed to have had one son, John, born Oct. 10, 1770 and three daughters: Elizabeth, born Feb.7, 1777, possibly in Deep River, Guilford County, NC ( who married Daniel Nicholson on May 11, 1801, Rowan Co., NC); Mary, born January 25, 1788 in Deep River, Guilford County, NC and Lydia, born March 28, 1790 in Deep River, Guilford County, NC. -- MARY died (probably shortly after the birth of her daughter, Lydia, on March 28, 1790) in Deep River, Guilford Co., N.C. MARY and VALENTINE were married prior to May, 1776. -- After the death of his first wife, (Mary Stafford) in 1790, he married his second wife, the widow Mary Cook, whose maiden surname was "Mills". Source: EQC - Deep River MM, Guilford, NC ( page # 833), that VALENTINE married a MARY COOK on December 4, 1806. ---- Valentine Pegg bought land on the East Fork of Deep River, Guilford County, NC in 1784. -- In 1778, VALENTINE was among those who signed "The Nicolite Petition" addressed to the NC General Assembly. -- As the Nicholites disintegrated, VALENTINE requested membership in a Quaker meeting as did most other Nicholites. According to the Encyclopedia of Quaker Genealogy (EQC), VALENTINE was "received on request" by Deep River on May 6, 1805. His daughter, LYDIA was " received on request" by Deep River on June 3, 1805. Was LYDIA another daughter of VALENTINE and MARY STAFFORD or was she one of VALENTINE's known daughters, i.e., ELIZABETH or MARY, who was using the name "LYDIA"? Source: Encyclopedia of Quaker Genealogy (EQC) - Deep River MM, Guilford, NC ( page # 833 --VALENTINE and "family" were granted a "certificate" to White Water MM, Indiana on August 8, 1812. MARY and LYDIA were granted a "certificate" to Whitewate MM, Indiana shortly thereafter on September 7, 1812.. In view of the fact that the EQC also states that VALENTINE's daughter MARY -- his daughter by MARY STAFFORD -- had married RICHARD MENDENHALL earlier the same year in February, it is believed the "MARY" who was granted certificate to Whitewater MM, Indiana on September 7, 1812, was apparently VALENTINE's second wife, Mary Mills/Cook. VALENTINE and Mary Mills/Cook migrated to the Whitewater MM, Wayne Co., IN, Dec. 31, 1812. -- He had a 3rd. wife, Sarah (Small) Griffin who he had married in Wayne Co., IN. April 4, 1821. Sarah died in 1853, in her 80th year. -- Valentine died on Nov. 24, 1828. He is buried at the Old Friends Burying Ground, Whitewater, Wayne Co, IN. The following list of Nicholite pioneers in Guilford County comes from Jack L. Perdue's "The Nicholites of Jamestown and Deep River" in THEGUILFORD GENEALOGIST, Vol 11, No 2, Winter 1984: Paris Chipman, James Caldwell, Major Anderson, Isaac Linnegar, Isaac Nichols, Valentine Pegg, Martin Pegg, Levin Charles, William Charles. This issue of the GG also abstracts the article "Another Look at Nicholites" published originally by Kenneth L. Carroll in THE SOUTHERN FRIEND, Vol V, No 2, 1983. Names mentioned are: Noble Covey, Horneys, Benjamin Shaw, Sullivan Family, Levin Wright, Joseph Standley, Charles family. Listed as possible Nicholite families: Anderson, Cain, Chilcutt, Cranor, Dawson, Goslin, Gray, Jester, Melvin, Miner, Moore, Ross, Rumly, Russell, Stafford, and Sapp. Harry Carpenter suggests Henry Johnson may provide additional leads. Henry died about 1812 in Stokes County. Do not remember if I saw Estate or Real Estate records but either a son or a son-in-law was buying the land from the other heirs: Jacob and Chloe Johnson Idol, William and Ruth Johnson Clampitt, Robertson and Hannah Johnson Stafford. Would be interesting to locate Henry Johnson, Jacob Idol or William Clampitt in the 1805 – 1810 era. If Robertson ( b 1760) was buying land around 1805, 1806 in Stokes County, then he should start showing in the Minutes of the Count of Pleas and Quarter Sessions for Stokes County as a juror or other entries. Most white adult males should appear periodically. Harry says, he has " not done anything with the Stokes County Court Minutes. I only have gone thru a few years of Guilford County prior to 1800." | PEGG, Valentine (I5373)

The will names his wife, *Elizabeth and mentions two ( 2) grandsons, Elijah and Elisha Stafford; 64 a. called Stafford Outlet. To dau. Eleaner Stafford, cattle and to son Thomas Stafford, stock; son Levin Stafford, stock; son Adam Stafford, furniture; son Solomon Stafford, furniture. To 5 youngest children, Ellener, Thomas, Levin, Adam and Solomon Stafford, personalty. To son William Stafford, my cooper's tools. He directs directs that his youngest son, Solomon Stafford be brought up in a Christian manner by William, his oldest survuving son. Son Adam Stafford is to be put to live with John Trice, to be brought up in a Christian-like manner and likewise son Levin Stafford to learn a blacksmith trade with John Rip. Witnessed by Joshua Wheeler, John Marret, James Layton. * Elizabeth Stafford, the widow, refused to be Executor and demanded one-third of the estate as her share. Note: Because John's will (above) placed his minor sons -- Solomon with his son, William; Adam (born in 1745) with a neighbor, John Trice; and Levin with another neighbor, John Rip -- this may indicate they probably were his children by his first wife, Alice, rather than by Elizabeth, his second wife. As stated above, JOHN II, the son of JOHN I, had died approximately five years earlier than JOHN I and therefore was not mentioned in JOHN I's will. Elijah and Elisha, the two grandsons mentioned in JOHN I's will, were the sons of JOHN II, deceased. -------------------------- 1.
