Don Lafayette Stafford, 84, of Hickory, N.C., died October 30, 2006, after a short period of declining health. Stafford was a teacher, professional baseball player, and in sales and management for several paper companies. Born July 30, 1922, and one of 10 children in Taylorsville, N.C., he was the son of the late Perry and Lottie Fox Stafford. He graduated from Hickory High School in 1941, where he had been a 3-sport letterman and was also the first North Carolina Shrine Bowl Football nominee from Hickory High. He joined the Navy and served in the Pacific Theater aboard the aircraft carrier named The USS Wasp from 1942-1945. Stafford was a member of three Hall of Fames. In 1985, he was inducted into the Lenoir-Rhyne College Sports Hall of Fame. In June of 1995, he was inducted into the South Atlantic League Minor League Hall of Fame. In May of 2003, Stafford was selected as a member of the Catawba County Sports Hall of Fame. Survivors include his wife, Vivienne Poteat Stafford, three brothers, Lindsay, Mack and Wade Stafford; and three sisters, Belle Teague, Toy Smith, and Sara Seitz; three sons, Gary Randolph Stafford (wife Frances McDonald Stafford), Perry Edward Stafford (wife Nan Trexler Stafford), and Don McNeely (wife Linda McNeely); and one daughter, Donna Stafford Willen (husband Dr. Steve Willen); and grandchildren, Luke, Beth, Emma, and Ellen Stafford and Eli and Sophie Willen; and Brad McNeely and Celeste McNeely Brinkley; and four great-grandchildren. The visitation will be held on Wednesday evening from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Bass-Smith Funeral Home. There will be a memorial service conducted by the Rev. Thomas L. Gibson at 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Luke's United Methodist Church. Military rites will follow in the church courtyard provided by the American Legion Post 48. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: Lottie and Perry Stafford Scholarship Fund, c/o Lenoir Rhyne College, 625 7th Ave., NE, Hickory, N.C. 28601. Bass-Smith Funeral Home and Crematory is serving the Stafford family.

Don was a hard working man, he left home (Colorado)at 18 in 1959 and drove to Alaska, he worked there on crab boats, trains, oil platforms. He had 4 kids and was married for 27 years to Linda Davison, in later life he worked in founderies.
He was a Marine Corps Veteran serving from 1964-1967 he worked as an MP and was in charge of motor pool.
He died from a heart attack in Gainesville Mo. While burning a brushpile in 90f heat.

Donald Paul Stafford, age 91, died unexpectedly on Friday, January 24, 2014 at his home. A lifelong resident of Waterford, Don had moved to Girard seven months ago to be near his family. He was born November 17, 1922, to the late Nelson Stafford and Beatrice Harbaugh. He married Ethel Mae McKay on June 14, 1947.
Donald was a 1941 graduate of Edinboro High School and spent his younger years working on the family farm. He served in the United States Army in World War II, seeing combat on Mindanao, Philippines, then finishing out his service in Japan when the war was over.
He worked for various employers, but retired from Raymond Showman and Sons as an operating engineer. Don was well known for building beautiful ponds. He attended the First Presbyterian Church of Waterford and was a life member of the American Legion Post 285. Don loved to hunt and to tinker with small engines–-he could fix anything. He planted a big garden every year and loved sharing the produce with friends and family.
He was preceded in death by his son, Doug Stafford; his brothers, Virgil Stafford and Blair Stafford; also, a brother-in-law, Clarence Blystone, and sister-in-law, Darlene Stafford. 
He will be greatly missed by his family, which includes his wife of 66 years, Ethel Mae Stafford; two daughters, Dona Warner (Jim) and Diane Lanagan, all of Girard; six grandchildren– Michael Warner (Carolyn) of West Springfield, Julia Warner (Jeff) and Jennifer Warner, all of Girard, Kristen Pratt (Andy) of Lake City, Lee Lanagan (Kristi) of Corry, and Lori Lanagan of Girard; five great-grandchildren– Dylan, Luke, Ryan, Leah and Aubrie; also, one brother, Neal Stafford; two sisters, Marian Knapp (Merle) and Phyllis Blystone; and many nieces and nephews.

Donald Paul Stafford, age 91, died unexpectedly on Friday, January 24, 2014 at his home. A lifelong resident of Waterford, Don had moved to Girard seven months ago to be near his family. He worked for various employers, but retired from Raymond Showman and Sons as an operating engineer. Don was well known for building beautiful ponds. He attended the First Presbyterian Church of Waterford and was a life member of the American Legion Post 285. Don loved to hunt and to tinker with small engines–-he could fix anything. He planted a big garden every year and loved sharing the produce with friends and family.
He was preceded in death by his son, Doug Stafford; his brothers, Virgil Stafford and Blair Stafford; also, a brother-in-law, Clarence Blystone, and sister-in-law, Darlene Stafford. 
He will be greatly missed by his family, which includes his wife of 66 years, Ethel Mae Stafford; two daughters, Dona Warner (Jim) and Diane Lanagan, all of Girard; six grandchildren– Michael Warner (Carolyn) of West Springfield, Julia Warner (Jeff) and Jennifer Warner, all of Girard, Kristen Pratt (Andy) of Lake City, Lee Lanagan (Kristi) of Corry, and Lori Lanagan of Girard; five great-grandchildren– Dylan, Luke, Ryan, Leah and Aubrie; also, one brother, Neal Stafford; two sisters, Marian Knapp (Merle) and Phyllis Blystone; and many nieces and nephews.

Dorothy Garland "Dottye" Stafford, 86, of Leonardtown died Aug. 7, 2011, at home.

Born Sept. 13, 1924, in Hammond, Ind., she was the daughter of the late William M. Garland and the late Mary M. Saffer Garland.
She grew up in Fancy Farm, Ky., and was a resident of Hilton Head Island, S.C., for 34 years and Leonardtown for six years.
She graduated from St. Joseph School of Nursing in Memphis, Tenn., in 1955.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Christi Case Swinney; and siblings, Margaret Ross, William Garland, Roseanne Thomas and Sister Joan Marie Garland.
