"Jane Gibb was a housemaid/servant when she met William.  Because of Jane, the family are allowed to wear the Buchanan tartan.  With Jane as matriarch the Stafford house was always full of visitors, lots of dances.  Many couples met at the Stafford house, Jane was something of a matchmaker.  Jane moved into the town of Lethbridge from the ranch after William died.  Jane had the first railroad ticket from Medicine Hat to Lethbridge (not sure if it was the first by a woman travelling, or anyone).  Betty remembers hearing a story about Jane receiving word that a woman was having a baby and needed her help.  A Mountie escorted her only so far in the winter, Jane went the rest of the way herself, having to cross the river at one point to get to the woman.  The family were Presbyterian.  The first church service in Lethbridge was held at the Stafford ranch.  Betty believes William was the head of the school board at one time."
