15171 | Benjamin Franklin ("Frank") Stetson was born December 25, 1846 in North Providence, Rhode Island to Nathaniel Whitaker Stetson and Louisa M. (Lawton) Stetson. Before the Civil War, Frank was living near Freedom, Maine where he was a farmer. He enlisted for three years at Bangor, Maine as a private in Company H, 11th Maine Infantry on September 5, 1862 at "age 18". (Clearly, he lied about his age.) He was described as having blue eyes, brown hair, light complexion, and standing 5 feet 7 inches tall. Frank was discharged from the 11th Maine Infantry on November 23, 1863 at Morris Island, South Carolina "In consequence of diarrhea accompanied with 'chills' or 'shakes' contracted while in the line of his duty on or about July 1st 1863." In his examination, the regimental surgeon stated that he had "chronic diarrhea, following intermittent fevers from which he has suffered during the last four months. He is quite feeble, lower extremities edematous. Disability total now. He is under age--unfit for the Invalid Corps." He reenlisted for three years at Augusta, Maine as a private in Company I, 7th Maine Infantry on June 22, 1864. Because the 7th Maine Infantry had lost so many men due to battles and disease, it was consolidated with men from the 5th Maine Infantry and 6th Maine Infantry whose enlistments had not yet expired. The new regiment was designated the 1st Maine Veteran Volunteer Infantry Regiment. Frank was transferred to Company I on August 21, 1864. He mustered out with the regiment in Washington, D.C. on June 28, 1865 after having participated in the Grand Review of the Armies. Frank enlisted as a private in Company B, 3rd Battalion, 13th U.S. Infantry at Memphis, Tennessee on December 20, 1865 and assigned to Jefferson Barracks, Missouri on January 1, 1866. He was promoted to corporal January 12, 1866. The muster rolls for October 1867 state that Frank "Deserted Sept 1st 1867" and was "apprehended Sept 5 / 67. He was tried for desertion, found guilty and duly sentenced." On February 1, 1868, he was reduced in rank to private. Frank was later transferred to Company E, 22nd U.S. Infantry in May 1869 during consolidation. His regiment served at Fort Stevenson, Dakota Territory (near present-day Garrison, North Dakota) which served as a supply base for Fort Totten. Fort Stevenson was constructed of adobe bricks and was ill-prepared for the harsh Dakota winters. The winter of 1868-1869 was particularly brutal with temperatures below 40 degrees Fahrenheit and snow accumulation above the barracks windows. Frank and many other men were dishonorably discharged on July 13, 1869 at Fort Stevenson per General Court Martial Order No. 36. He had been found guilty of "Mutinous conduct committed on or about Feby 11 / 69." After his service in the regular army, Frank moved to Kentucky where he took up residence in Gallatin County, Grant County, Lincoln County, Boone County, and Kenton County. He worked for the Louisville & Nashville Railroad as a switchman for many years. Frank was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic and frequently visited the National Military Home in Dayton, Ohio. He died at his home in Ludlow, Kentucky on March 4, 1930 and is buried in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell, Kentucky. He is a direct descendant of Cornet Robert Stetson, both through his father and mother. Family links: Parents: Nathaniel Whitaker Stetson (1816 - 1885) Louisa M. 15185 | Benjamin Stafford, Jr Memorial Photos Flowers Edit Share Learn about upgrading this memorial... Birth: May 31, 1809 Death: Sep. 23, 1884 BENJAMIN STAFFORD, the earliest settler now living in Stafford Township, was born in Jefferson County, Ky., May 31,1809, and is the only one of eleven children now living born to Benjamin and Eva (Caress) Stafford. In 1818, Benjamin, the subject of this sketch, came to Greene County, although it was then a part of Sullivan County, with his brother Jesse. The following year, his father came to the same place, having entered land here the year before, and it was for him that Stafford Township was named. Mr. Stafford received but a limited education, such as the log schoolhouses of that primitve day afforded. On his birthday, 1832, his marriage with Martha Ball, of Greene County, was solemnized, and to their union five children were born, only one of whom, Berlin, is now living. In 1844, his wife Martha died, and again in October, 1846, he was married to Nancy A. Page, by whom he is the father of eight children, but five now living, named Martha A., Noah, Amanda, Presley and Henry. Mr. Stafford has been a most successful farmer all his life, and he now owns 260 acres of well-improved farming land. Of late years, he has paid much attention to raising stock, and during the war engaged in raising mules. He is a Democrat in politics, and has held the office of Trustee with the best of satisfaction. As a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, he is foremost in aiding the benevolent causes in his community, with both his influence and means. Throughout his life, he has been an industrious and upright citizen, and enjoys the high regard of all who know him, and now as life's sun goes slowly down, he reposes in the calm contentment that no cloud obscures its setting. 15189 | Bernice Susan Ellsworth had a strong spirit, so God chose her to gift with polo at the age of 2. She was a bright light and determined to live a full life. Horace Ellsworth was the one true love of her life. Bernice's parents gave a plot of land to the newlyweds and Horace along side his new father in law built a home. It was custom made for Bernice, allowing her to reach the counters and sinks in a functional manner. Together Bernice and Horace gave birth to one child, a daughter named Beverly. Beverly was brought up to appreciate music and baton twirling. Beverly eventually had 3 children. I remember my Grandmother for her loving compassion and understanding. She held my hand through hard times, sharing her strength. She was known for her apple pies, and she shared her secrets with me. I now carry the flame for the apple pie making. She showed me her heart and I will forever love her. Lisa Davis | STAFFORD, Bernice Susan (I87661)
