Her parents appear to be Jonathan & Elizabeth (Knighton) Cooper per some family trees online & a NC Marriage Record. Jonathan b. June 1, 1785 Sampson Co., NC & d. Oct. 27, 1841 GA. (this could be wrong). He married Elizabeth on Dec. 18, 1800 in Stokes Co.(now Forsythe Co.), NC. Polly had at least 1 brother, Wyatt Cooper 1805-1850 buried in Cooper Cem., Olive Hill, Carter Co.,KY.

Mary, or "Polly" as she was called, appears to have had quite a life. From what I can piece together from different family trees online & death certificates of later children, it looks like she had 2 children out of wedlock by a Hiram K. Begley, because they took the Cooper name: Hiram Begley Cooper 1823-1895 & Cyrus Begley Cooper 1825-1892, both buried in Cooper Cem.,Carter Co.,KY.
Next came Malinda Cooper Oct. 18, 1829-June 28, 1900 (who married Ezekiel Stone Jr. & buried in Stone Cem., Lewis Co.,KY). Our family lore had always been that she was born out of wedlock & that her father was a "Jacobs". The Jacob name is also found in "Public Member Documents" of Knighten, Cooper, Bryant Family Histories on Ancestry when I put in name Jonathan Cooper.
However, there is a Kentucky Marriage Record for Polly Cooper & Washington Patton for Nov. 9, 1825 in Floyd Co.,KY. So, if Malinda was born in 1829, was her father a Jacobs or Patton? I believe Jacobs, because she kept the Cooper name.
Next came Sylvester Patton Stafford 1833-1864 (who married Rebecca Lewis 1852 & died in Civil War). I believe his father was the Patton (because of middle name), but took Stafford name after his mother married James Stafford in 1835 (he would have been 2 yrs. old).
Next came Rebecca Stafford Aug. 25, 1835 - Jan. 24, 1926 (who 1st married Commodore Perry Gooden & 2nd James Liles). She could have been James Stafford's daughter even though James & Polly didn't marry until Dec. 27, 1835 per Northern Kentucky Marriages online.
Mary was a spry, petite woman. Loved to dance. Lived in an old 2-story house. She would dance up and down the stairway. Mary was crippled when older.

Herbert was born in Cleveland, Tennessee in 1887. His family traveled to Texas sometime before 1900 by horse and wagon and that adventure became a favorite memory to share with family for many years to come. He married Ethel Stafford on June 23, 1913. Herbert was 26 and Ethel was 14. Herbert worked as a farmer all his life in Altoga, TX and Lone Oak, TX.
He enjoyed sharing stories about his life and reciting Civil War poetry. He enjoyed listening to his sons play music. In their later years, he and Ethel loved spending time on their porch swing in Lone Oak and were always ready to host family and friends.
