Buford entered the United States Navy after high school and served in the Pacific during World War II aboard the USS Arkansas, and saw action at Iwo Jima. He returned home soon after the war, and married Emma Ann Stafford. They moved to a farm in Newport in 1950, and raised their family there. Buford farmed and was a rural mail carrier. He was a charter member of the Newport Ruritan Club, an honorary member of the Newport Rescue Squad and member of Newport Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church. Buford was predeceased by his parents, wife, brother Denny, and first son Steven Denny. He is survived by three children and their spouses: Timothy and Sheila, Susan Steele-Ward and Tom Ward, and Phillip and Laurie. Also surviving is a daughter-in-law, Vicki Journell. 21308 | HICKORY Nell S. Stafford, 85, went home to the Lord on Friday, Feb. 26, 2016. She was born May 15, 1930, in Burnsville, North Carolina, to Walter and Sarah McDowell Silver and came to Hickory when she was 16. On April 10, 1949, she married the love of her life, Floyd W. Stafford and they were together for 44 years until his passing on March 27, 1994. Nell loved being at home surrounded by her family and cherished every minute with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was the proud host of many family dinners and holiday celebrations. Nell is survived by her daughter, Rita Stafford Lowman of Granite Falls; sister, Ruby McMahan of Burnsville; grandchildren, Stephen W. Lowman and wife, Layla of Hickory, Kris D. Lowman and wife, Mandy of Hickory and Amanda L. Aldrich and husband, Jonathan of Granite Falls; great-grandchildren, Jessica Lowman, Tanner Lowman, Tristan Lowman, Ava Aldrich and Chase Lowman; and numerous nieces and nephews. She also leaves her cherished little dog, Regan. She was preceded in death by her infant daughter, Donna Rea Stafford; brothers, Jess, Ralph and Brian Silver; and three half sisters, Bonnie Wilson, Gladys Hefner and Blanche Romine. Born Aug. 20, 1932, in Alexander County, she was the daughter of the late Perry and Lottie Fox Stafford. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, George Howard Seitz; sisters, Blanche S. Stafford and Belle S. Teague; brothers, Glenn W. Stafford, Roy Stafford, Don L. Stafford and Lindsay Stafford. Sara was a member of New Jerusalem Lutheran Church for 66 years where she taught Sunday school. She was retired from the Catawba County School system. She loved to garden, work in her yard, latch-hook rugs, embroider pillows, and quilts. She vacationed at Surf City for 56 years. She was also a former Girl Scout Leader. She is survived by her daughter, Janet Seitz Hambrick, of Hickory; two grandsons, Jackson Seitz Hambrick and Gaither Lee Hambrick, both of Hickory; a sister, Toy S. Also surviving are his beloved dogs, Sugar, Squirt, Tarra, Sasha, Bella, and his cat, Pearl. A celebration of J. D.'s life will be held at 2pm Tuesday at Church of Christ in Kernersville with Rev. D. was born on November 25, 1959 in Grayson County Virginia to Yvetta Lee Wilson Stafford and Jimmy Edward Stafford. The love of J. D.'s life was Deboraha Stafford, with whom he had built his life with for nearly 32 years. On March 11, 1988, they married. James enjoyed blues music, playing guitar, and attending concerts.
