Marvin Stafford, 43, farmer and school bus driver residing in the Columbiana community seven miles southeast of here, was murdered in his bed while he slept about 1 o'clock Wednesday morning. Sheriff Rube M. Smith states that Mrs. Lillian Stafford, wife of the murdered man has admitted the killing.
Mrs. Stafford has been in ill health for more than four months since she suffered a nervous breakdown. It is said that the Staffords had a slight quarrel Tuesday afternoon and that it preyed upon the wife's mind, finally culminating in the crime at the early morning hour.
Funeral services for the dead man were held at Scotland Baptist Church at 4 p.m. Wednesday. The Rev. N. G. Hickman, pastor, was in charge of the services. Interment was at Scotland Cemetery.
Mr. Stafford is also survived by two sons, Edwin and Chester, and five sisters, Mrs. W.H. King, Vaiden; Mrs. Charles Pittman, Oklahoma; Mrs. Annie Pittman, Crenshaw; Mrs. Joe Odom, Noxapater, and Mrs. Guy Rogers of Stewart. The tragedy has cast a pall over the entire county due to the popularity of both Mr. and Mrs. Stafford and the prominence of both families.
***Later news articles indicate that Mrs. Stafford was found by a jury to be insane at the time of the murder, and was confined to a state hospital for a time afterwards.
There is no evidence that she was ever found to be criminally responsible. It would appear that she recovered from her illness and went on to lead a productive life.

Exerpted obituary: Sunday Star (Easton, MD) - Sunday, April 11, 2010

Dola Marie Sylvester Dukes (known to many as Marie), former resident of Denton, for most of her life, passed away on Wednesday, April 7, 2010, at Emeritus, an assisted living facility in San Dimas, Calif. She was 87.
Dola's story began in Goldsboro, where she was born to Harold and Ruth Quillen Sylvester on April 21, 1922.
She grew up on a farm near Felton, Del. After she graduated from Felton High School, she attended the University of Delaware until she transferred to Washington College in Chestertown, from which she graduated in 1944.
Upon college graduation, she accepted a position teaching high school English in Cecil County, until her marriage to Albert G. Dukes. She and Albert had one daughter, Barbara. She spent the next several years raising her daughter and occasionally filling in as a substitute teacher in Caroline County. After Barbara entered nursing school in Easton, Dola began a career as a social worker. She was employed by the Caroline County Department of Social Services where she worked for more than 20 years, retiring in 1987.
After Albert passed in 1998, Dola remained in their home until December 2005, when she moved to California to be near her daughter and grandchildren. She lived with her daughter for several months until health issues made it necessary for her to move to an assisted living facility nearby.
Dola is survived by her daughter, Barbara Slaughter and her husband Roger of Covina, Calif.; granddaughters Desiree McArthur and her husband Bill of Covina and Nicole Pinckard and her husband Bob of Claremont, Calif.; a great-granddaughter, Sage MacArthur; great-grandsons Colby Pinckard, Mason McArthur, and Kaiden Pinckard; one brother, Nolan Sylvester and his wife Betty Lee; three sisters, Page Brothers, Janet Palmatary and her husband Louis, and Mary Lou Cooper and her husband Bobby; a sister-in-law, Louise Singer; and numerous nieces and nephews. She will be missed and remembered by all whose lives she touched.

Explorer, United States Naval Officer. He led the first expeditions to reach the geographic North Pole of Earth, reaching it in his final expedition in 1909. Commissioned an officer in the United States Navy in the civil engineering corps in 1882, he soon hired Matthew A. Henson to be his valet; Henson would accompany him on all his expeditions. In 1908, after having already attempted two trips to the North Pole, Peary and his party sailed to Ellesmere Island (at the far north of Canada) on the “USS Roosevelt”. In early March, 1909, the expedition (Matthew A. Henson, Dr. John W. Goodsell, Donald B. MacMillion, Ross G. Marvin, George Borup and Captain Robert Bartlett) left their base camp at Cape Columbia and headed north in dog sleds (which Henson built). Peary, Henson and four Eskimos reached the North Pole on April 6, 1909 (the others turned back at various places along the way). It is now thought that Peary and Henson may have been 30-60 miles (50-100 km) short of reaching the pole (because of navigational mistakes that were made). Frederick A. Cook (who had accompanied Peary on an earlier expedition) later claimed to have reached the North Pole before Peary, in April 1908; this claim was later rejected completely as a cruel hoax. Robert Peary retired with the rank of Rear Admiral.
