Suffering from a fracture of the spinal column and other injuries resulting from a fall of fifty feet into the rocky bed of a creek when he was overtaken by a train on a trestle near Worthville, Fred Wilson, of that place, was brought to Louisville last night and is in a serious condition at Sts. Mary and Elizabeth Hospital. Wilson was walking over the trestle on his way home when a Louisville-bound L. & N. freight train approached. In seeking safety at the side of the tracks he fell, and when found by villagers, who had been notified by the train crew, he was unconscious. He had not recovered upon arriving at the hospital, and physicians said last night, he had little chance of recovery. 'Nate' Stroup was born July 8, 1906, in Rossville, Kans., and died in Belleville June 24, 1981, at the age of 74 years, 11 months, and 16 days. His early years were spent in the Rossville-Topeka area. During WW II, 1942-1945 he was a member of the US Army and served as a communications sergeant in the European theatre. He was awarded a Good Conduct Medal and the Purple Heart (with one Bronze Oak leaf Cluster) for his part in the Allied Invasion. Following his discharge in 1945 he resumed working for the Southwestern Bell Telephone Company until his retirement in 1967. In July, 1946 he was united in marriage to Blanche Petr (sic) and they resided in Belleville. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother. He is survived by his wife, Blanche, of Belleville; a stepdaughter Irene Mottl of San Bruno, Calif., two step-grandsons, Richard Mottl of Littleton, Colo., Kerry Mottl of Houston, Tex., five step-greatgrandchildren. Nelson, son of Gus and Edla Swenson Nelson, was born at Norway, Kansas on December 30, 1886 and passed away at the Heartland Care Center in Belleville, Kansas on December 2, 1986 at the age of 99 years, 11 months and 2 days. Amil received his education in the schools of Republic County. He was united in marriage to Belle Stafford in March of 1911 and to this union two children were born, Clemons L. and Leona. Amil was engaged in farming for many years north of Republic, Kansas. Amil and his wife Belle retired in 1958 and moved to Belleville, Kansas. Amil was able to live in his own home after Mrs. Nelson passed away in 1975 for several years. He was a kind and loving husband, father and grandfather. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Belleville. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gus and Edla nelson, his wife Belle in 1975, three sisters, and two brothers. He is survived by one son, Clemons Nelson and his wife Margaret of Hidden Hills, California; one daughter Mrs. Leona Edington, Seattle, Washington; four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Funeral service was held at the First United Methodist Church, Belleville, at 10:00 am on Friday, December 5, 1986 conducted by the Reverend James Graves. Mrs. James Graves was organist with Steve Scofield serving as soloist. Casket bearers were LaVon Bowersox, Gene Heyka, Kenneth Simms, Charles Stafford, Dale Stafford, and Ralph Walter. 15117 | Belleville (KS) Telescope - 17 Aug 1950 Leslie Evert Holmes Leslie Evert Holmes, son of Andrew and Angeline Holmes, was born December 29, 1870, near Olathe, and departed this life on August 9, 1950, at Republic, at the age of 79 years, 7 months, and 11 days. In early manhood he accepted Christ as his Savior and later joined the Christian church in Chester, Neb. He was united in marriage to Miss Bessie Stafford on February 5, 1902, and to this union ten children were born. In 1901 Holmes became afflicted with arthritis and though his suffering was long, he could always see the brighter side of life. For the past three years he has been confined to his bed. Mr. Holmes lived on a farm near Byron, Neb., for nearly 20 years before moving to near Republic where he and his family have lived for more than 30 years. He was preceded in death by two children, two sisters, and three brothers. Left to mourn his death are his devoted wife; six sons, Norman of Portland, Ore., Elmer E. of Concordia, Edson of Republic, Irvin R. of Price, U., Kenneth of Byron, Neb., and Lee of the home; two daughters, Mrs. Marjorie Gray of Byron, Neb., and Velma of the home; one brother, Elmer of Byron, Neb.; two sisters, Mrs. Lola Palmer of Marysville and Mrs. LeRoy Brumbaugh of Winner, S. She attended school in Republic and taught elementary school there. December 30, 1908, she was married to Carl K. Boylan at the home of her parents. Two children were born to this union. The couple farmed near Republic and Hardy until retiring and moving into Hardy. In 1972 they moved to the good Samaritan Center in Superior where they celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary in 1973. She was a member of the Hardy Union Church where she instructed the adult bible class for several years. While at the Good Samaritan Center she participated in Bible study. Preceding her in death were her husband, in August 1974; two brothers, Edward and Fred Stafford; two sisters, Lillie Stafford and Bessie Holmes. She is survived by her children; Mrs. Donald (Eula) Pederson of Davenport, Nebr., and Cheslie of Scandia; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held July 17 at the Hardy Union Church, with the Rev. Richard Millikin officiating. Burial was in Washington Cemetery, Republic County, Kansas. He was united in marriage to Leona Stenson in 1941. They lived in Republic County, Kansas and moved to Oregon in 1964, settling in Keizer in 1967. He was a member of Local 701 Operating Engineers, Disabled American Veterans and Veterans of Foreign Wars. On July 12, 1956, she was married Cyrus Robert Roberson. She was a member of the Nazarene Church of Superior the past 13 years. 15127 | Belleville (KS) Telescope - 27 May 1999 Elmer Edward Holmes Elmer Edward Holmes, son of Everett (sic) and Bessie Stafford Holmes, was born November 28, 1905 at Byron, Nebraska, and died May 20, 1999 at the Hilltop Estates, Gothenburg, Nebraska, at the age of 93 years. He joined the U.S. Army on April 13, 1942. During his tour of duty, he spent seven months in Fort Roberts and was stationed in Alaska for two and a half years. He took care of the Nurses Quarters. Later, he served int he infantry. He was stationed in Seattle, Washington, when he received an Honorable Discharge. On September 25, 1945 he was discharged. He received the Good Conduct Medal and Asiatic Pacific Service Medal. He farmed near Republic, Kansas, most of his adulct life. he worked at the grain elevator in Republic for a short time after retiring from farming in 1960. He was united in marriage to Lena Opal West on March 18, 1945 and to this union one son was born. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Lena in 1991, four brothers and one sister. She attended rural school at Pleasant Grove and high school at Belleville and Republic, graduating at Republic in 1940. Bette Jean possessed a quiet spirit, cheerful and gay and always had a kind word for everyone she met. She had a deep sympathy for those in trouble, and always derived satisfaction in healing the wounds of sorrow which others had suffered. She was of artistic temperament and her radiant soul expressed its exuberance in singing. Her sweet singing often made her the messenger of happiness and hope. He love for music was evidenced in early childhood and continued as a source of happiness to her throughout her brief life. A wealth of pleasing personality was hers which made her a favorite in her large circle of friends. Converted in Christ in meeting some time ago under Mrs. Pettijean, her Christian personality bloomed into beauty and loving kindness. Christ's spirit of love was enthroned in her heart to be revealed in the Christian character of young womanhood. 15130 | Belleville (KS) Telescope - 29 Aug 1974 Carl Kirkwood Boylan, a resident of the Hardy community for many years, died last August 23 at the Nuckolls county hospital in Superior, Nebr., He was 86 years, four months and 15 days of age. He was born at What Cheer, Iowa, April 8, 1888, one of seven children of Oscar and Armina Boylan. He came to the Republic, Kansas community with his parents where he grew to manhood. On December 30, 1908, he was united in marriage to Clara Stafford and to this union two children were born. Last December the 30th they celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary. The majority of his life was devoted to farming and masonry operations in the Republic and Hardy communities. He united with the church at an early age and was a member of the Union Church at Hardy at the time of his death. 15132 | Belleville (KS) Telescope - 30 Aug 1923 Samuel David Stafford Samuel David Stafford was born in Potter County, Indiana, January 18, 1856. Whe ten years old he moved to Minnesota with his parents, near St. Paul, where a home was bought and where the family lived for a year. Upon the death of the elder Stafford the mother took her children, consisting of six boys and two girls and moved back to the old home in Indiana. Later the family moved to Kansas and in 1879 homesteaded in Washington township, this county. When twenty-one years of age Samuel D. Stafford homesteaded in Liberty township where he and his family lived for forty odd years. He was married to Rosella Morehead on December 19th, 1878 and to this union nine children were born. Mr. Stafford was converted at a revival meeting held at the Dry Lake school house by Brother Henry Williams in 1890 and shortly thereafter joined the Methodist church in which he has been an active member for the past thirty-three years. He served as class leader and superintendent of his Sunday School many terms and always took an active part in church work. Mr. Stafford was successful as a farmer and stock raiser, he always enjoyed good health and was an excellent neighbor and a good father and husband to his family. A little over a year ago he took throat affliction which caused him to loose his voice. He consulted Mayo Brothers at Rochester, Monnesota, and several other specialists and all pronounced his trouble cancer of the voice box. He was a patient sufferer and faithful to the end. Death came to him on Wednesday evening, August 15th. Funeral services were conducted from the Methodist church on Friday afternoon by Rev. Rath of Agenda, with burial in the Washington cemetery. Married to Stella James on September 10, 1902, they lived on a farm in Republic county a number of years before moving to a ranch at Franklin, Neb. He was later overseer at a CCC camp and an engineer at Enders Dam, Neb. Stafford was a member of the Methodist church. He was preceded in death by his wife in 1941. She was 90 years, two months, 25 days. Mrs. Nelson was the last of nine children of Samuel and Rozella Stafford. She was a life long resident of Republic County. After attending Washington School she entered Kansas Wesleyan College in Salina where she studied music for three years. Later she taught school and gave music lessons. On March 19, 1911, Belle Stafford was united in marriage to Amil O. Nelson at the home of her parents. The couple lived on their farm near Republic until 1955 when they retired to Belleville. She was a member of the Belleville First United Methodist Church and the Priscilla Club. Surviving are her husband Amil of the home, son Clemons, Los Angeles, Calif., daughter Mrs. Tom McConwell of Kansas City, four grandchildren, Edward McConwell. Mrs. Tom Shawyer and Stephen and Terri Nelson, and five great-grandchildren. 15140 | Belleville (KS) Telescope 22 Apr 1954 Thomas Edward Stafford Thomas Edward Stafford, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Stafford, was born October 15, 1878, near Republic, Kan., and passed away April 10, 1954, at the St. Joseph's hospital in Concordia, after a long illness at the age of 75 years, 5 months and 26 days. He grew to manhood on his father's homestead near Republic and was united in marriage to Mirtie Bell Morehead on July 12, 1897. To this union were born five children, three sons and two daughters. He taught in Republic county schools for 15 years, later moving to Cuba where he was a rural route carrier for 30 years. After retiring he spent two years in Oregon and two years in California, returning to Belleville where he resided at the time of his death. He was converted and joined the Methodist church in Republic at the age of 25. He was an active member of the Masonic lodge, Blue lodge, and Eastern Star for many years. Having lived in Republic county the greater part of his life, he was widely known and respected by all who knew him. He was always ready to help in times of need and noted for his honesty and integrity as a wise counselor to those who sought his guidance. He is affectionately remember as "Prof." by those whom he taught, and as "the mail man" by many families in the Cuba area. During his long illness, his patience in his suffering was an inspiration to those who visited or cared for him. He always had a cheerful smile for everyone, and expressed his thanks and appreciation for each small service bestowed upon him. She received her education in the schools of Republic County. She was united in marriage to Fred Stafford and to this union one daughter, Mildred was born. Mrs Stafford died and she was later married to Columbus (Lum) Owens and O D Grim, both preceded her in death. Addie lived in the Republic community for many years, later moving to Belleville with her husband , O D Grim, where she resided until her death. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, one daughter, Mildred Brumbaugh, five brothers and four sisters. 15143 | Belleville Telescope 3 Jun 1993 page 5A Blanche Stroup Blanche Peter Stroup, daughter of Joseph and Anna Keptia Stroup, was born May 10 1900 on a farm near Wayne, and died Thursday May 27, 1993at the age of 93 years and 10 days. She attended Turkey Creek, Agenda and Cuba schools graduating from Cuba High School in 1918. She married Clyde Stafford, her first husband, and they had one daughter Irene. In 1946 she united in marriage to Nathaniel Stroup and they resided in Belleville Until their deaths. He died June 24, 1981. Mrs. Stroup was an accomplished musician, playing piano and piano accordion. During the 1920s and 1930s she played with several orchestras and for a while a Nebraska radio station. She was also church pianist for a time. In the 1920s she opened and operated a millinery shop in Cuba. Later she owned and operated Blanche's Beauty Shop in Cuba until the mid 19408 when she moved to Belleville. There she operated a beauty shop into the 1960s. She was a member of the Cuba Presbyterian Church, and a former member of the VFW Auxiliary and Rebecca Lodge. She spent the last seven years as a resident of Heartland Care Center in Belleville. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Nathaniel; a sister, and a brother, Edward. She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Giles (Irene) Mottl of San Bruno, Calif.; niece, Jean Ann Jeffries; grandsons, Richard and Kerry Mottl; six great-grandchildren; two great- great-grandchildren. He attended White school and graduated from Cuba High School. He worked for United Airlines from 1940 to 1980. He was united in marriage to Irene Stafford on July 17, 1940 at Chicago, IL and to this union two sons were born. On July 17, 2000, the Mottl's celebrated 60 years of marriage. He and his family lived in Detroit, MI; Washington D.C.; Denver. CO; Valley Stream, NY; and lived 33 years in San Bruno, CA. They also had a home in the Cuba community for 23 years and for the past three years it was their primary home. He was a member of the International Association of Machinists, the Retired United Pilots Association and the Cuba Presbyterian Church. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers and his wife. 15145 | Belleville Telescope 6 Sep 1945 MRS. STAFFORD DIES Mrs. Rose Stafford, 83, passed away Tuesday August 28 in the Patterson Hospital in Belleville. Funeral services were held August 31in the United Brethren Church conducted by Rev. Mr. Riley of Courtland. Mrs. Rose Stafford Rosella Morehead, daughter of Thomas and Rachel Morehead, was born July 4, 1862, in Jackson county, Iowa, and passed away August 28, 1945, at the age of 83 years, one month and 24 days. When six years of age she moved with her parents to Nemaha, Nebr., and lived there five years, then moving to Republic county, December 10, 1873, where she lived the rest of her life. She was married to Samuel D. Stafford December 19, 1878, and he preceded her in death August 15, 1923. She was converted when a child and joined the Methodist class at Washington school house in 1877 and was a faithful member the rest of her life. She leaves eight children, 28 grandchildren, 57 great grandchildren, and three great great grandchildren, one brother and two sisters, many nieces and nephews and a host of friends. | MOREHEAD, Rosella E.
